REVIEW: Selena Gomez EDP...

As you may have gathered, I'm indulging in some Celebrity Fragrance exploration of late, and this one by Selena Gomez was both a delightful surprise, AND a massive disappointment. The fragrance is gorgeous and I love it, but the presentation - well let's just say it leaves a lot to be desired! I should tell you that the sample bottle on display in Priceline was just that - the bottle. The sales assistant took the pretty box to the counter, I paid for it, and then headed home...

Imagine my shock when I unwrapped the contents, and discovered, this...this kitschy tacky cap on the top! Honestly it looks like a left over from a fun fair, or one of those party supplies stores - what was she thinking?????

As you can see in the pic below, the bottle itself is the epitome of elegance - to me it looks like an exquisite evening gown, the draping effect of the glass folds encapsulating the finest work of an haute couture artisan. Positively breathtaking, so why on earth would Ms. Gomez (or her marketing team) absolutely TRASH the effect with such a ridiculous cap? It's beyond me. I swear ANY other lid on this bottle would allow its magnificence to shine, and I'll prove it to you...

Here it is with the top from my Vera Wang Lovestruck bottle - fabulously girly, and a magical fashion statement...

And here's my personal fave - this is the lid from a scented candle. Gives it a fun and delightfully oriental character, don't you think?...

And below she's crowned with the cap from the only other far-less-than-beautiful perfume bottle in my collection - Beyonce's Rise. Even this spiky monstrosity takes on a majestic air when partnered with the graceful flacon...

Considering how beautiful just about every other bottle put out by a celeb is, I think this is a perfect example of what NOT to do in the design world. Anyways, now that I've got that less than flattering rant off my chest, let me tell you about the fragrance itself...

This is a very sweet and tropical gourmand fruity floral - that's a mouthful indeed, or should I say a nose-full lol. Starts with the juiciest ripe raspberries, peach and orange, softens down to fragrant purple freesias with a touch of musk and dewberry, and finishes with vanilla, amber, chocolate and coconut. Is your mouth watering? Apparently she held a competition on her website where her fans could vote for their favourite ingredients, and this is the result...

If you're not keen on sweet-as perfumes, then leave this one alone. I adore it, mainly because every time I spritz, my nose picks up a different ingredient emphasis, so in fact I never know how it's going to turn out - depends on the air temperature, humidity, my mood, and obviously my skin chemistry at the time. Fascinating - girly and sophisticated, fresh and seductive, fun and flirty. Another reason I'm attracted to it is because I've never smelt it on anyone else, but then maybe I just can't identify it due to its whirlwind of flavours. Definitely improves as the minutes go by, takes about half an hour for all the notes to eventually unite, and that's when I love it the most...

From memory I paid around $25 for the 50ml bottle - pretty good value, and it lasts up to 5 hours on my bod. Rest assured after this photo shoot, I hid the cap in a very dark and obscure place, and I expect to only come across it again the next time I move ha ha...

What do you think - is it just me or do you agree that the cap and bottle combo is a total mismatch?

Take care of you,
kats xxx

  1. I'll probably repeat myself that I don't like sweet scents, but Kat, all your fragrances have interesting design. This one, oh my, the cap is really horrible and I really enjoy your first idea how this should look.

    1. The possibilities are endless in the creativity department Michelle, which is what really annoys me about this silly cap - they could have done so much better without even trying lol ♥♥♥

    1. Hi Claire - hope you like it, it's not for everyone though, I was even surprised that it took my fancy, I'm not usually into anything that has a "gourmand' content xxx

  3. That cap is the WORST! You're right, it looks like a party decoration for a tacky hen's night. I recently picked up Davidoff Cool Water Summer Seas LE for $25 in Priceline and very happy with it! Classy bottle and nice summery scent.

  4. Oh my god, Kat, that's seriously the best rant about a perfume cap I've ever read! I couldn't stop laughing my way through it!

    1. Darling Leah, thanks sweetheart, glad you had a bit of a chuckle. To be honest I had to rewrite this a few times to make it publishable - in my first few drafts I really let loose, but it wasn't very constructive, hence the additional photos ha ha ♥♥♥
