EOTD: Red and Black...

Definitely a cooler weather look, I'm going for RED this Autumn/Winter. It's not on the "fashionable" shade horizon this season, but I don't give a hoot - I've so rarely worn red in my almost 60 years, but I'm officially embracing it as of now lol. Not sure what's brought about this change of heart - apart from my hair, there's been very little direct contact with this bold and beautiful shade throughout my life, and certainly not in the last 10 years, possibly because I fell for that old saying "redheads should never wear red" (who said that?). Anyways I'm making up for lost time now, both in my wardrobe AND on my lips, and most surprisingly, my eyes!

I have only a couple of really red shadows in my kit - all but one are matte, and I normally go for matte reds especially when I do rainbows or multicoloured combos, but this shimmery one is roaring up my charts to #1. I think it's because the shimmer makes it stand out as an obvious eye shadow rather than looking like an unfortunate skin condition, or the result of watching too many soppy movies ha ha...

This particular red came in a wallet style palette by DB with a leopard print cover - here's the inside when I first bought it...

For a base on the inner two thirds, I used a lip crayon (!) that came in one of the DJ's sample bags - Gorgeous Cosmetics in the shade Moulin. I don't use it as a lip liner because it bleeds and feathers into the creases around my mouth, but as an eyeshadow base, it's brilliant!

And the whole red & black look of the day...

On the outer third went black Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Gel liner, and I overlaid it with MUA matte charcoal (shade #20), as well as using it to soften the liner on my lower lash line...

So do you have a fashion relationship with red? Would you wear red eye shadow?

Take care of you,
kats xxx

  1. Kat, that red is stunning. I would be too scared to try it, but you're so brave, which is such a good thing, because it totally works for you!

    1. Indie hon, I've seen how fabulous you look with a red lips and I reckon a russetty red shimmery shadow with your gorgeous brown eyes would be simply STUNNING - honestly it's nowhere near as scary as I thought it would be ♥

    1. Thank you sweetheart ♥ This is another palette I keep forgetting about (methinks I have way too many lol) - as is usually the case, there's a couple of duds, but it was worth it just for that red :-)

  5. I love how you worked with the red! I've never worn red eye shadow before, but I'm feeling inspired :)
Looking at my wardrobe there appears to be no red pieces apart from a maroon jumper, they don't sell much red clothing and it's not my favourite colour but adore your red hair!

    1. Hey gorgeous I had to go shopping as my hanging space only contained corals, terracottas, plums and burgundies, and you're right - there's not a lot of red about at the moment. Hmmm I don't think much of my timing lol..

  6. BRILLIANT - Both the look, which I love and the concept that you don't care whether it's "fashionable" or not! I just love it when one of my favourite people is happy to go their own way. Having done just that for much of my long life I applaud it in others. You perfect the overall effect better than anyone I know Kats.
    With love,
    Trish.

    1. Beloved Trish , my kindred spirit in more ways than one ♡ I gave up trying to be fashionable a long time ago, it sure doesn't suit me, and I'm hopeless with shoes - I find so many of them quite unflattering and un-feminine AND uncomfortable so I don't even go there...

    1. Lol Jasmine you haven't seen all the disastrous results while I practised lol - if I get the slightest tinge of red anywhere other than my top lid, I look terrible, so I reckon the secret is in the placement. Thanks for you lovely comment hon xxx

  8. Oh Kat, whenever I wear red on my eyes, they do look as if they have a skin disease, LOL !!! I receive the comment "What's wrong with your eyes ???"
This combo looks so great on you !!!
Using a lip crayon on your eyes ? ....I've never heard of that before. Does it leave the lid feeling "greasy" ? What does it do and what colour did you use ? I'm so full of questions : /.

    1. You can use any sort of crayon on your eyes as a base hon, so long as it doesn't irritate. The whole point of a base is to be "greasy" so that the shadow sticks to it - once you've applied the shadow over the top, it's no longer greasy :-) The lip pencil I used for this look is bright fire engine red :-)
